An early adopter of technology, I am not. Although friends and family had been waggling their various new smart watches and all the newfangled widgets they bring to one's life in my face for the past few years, my thrifty nature and adversity to superfluous gadgetry prevented me from jumping on the small-screen bandwagon.
As obstinate as I can be, however, I have noted a few features that might be attractive: I am a man of a certain age now and I am constantly being badgered by my quack of a doctor to monitor my blood pressure and heart rate etc. Also, even though we are all tethered by our ubiquitous smart phones wherever we go, it may prove to be convenient when I actually just want to, oh say... know what time it is. So for the low price of this unit, I thought it was time to saddle up.
I must say, I am impressed with the robust suite of features and ease of connectivity thus far. I was expecting little more than a cheap Dollar Store knockoff with plastic buttons and some sort of Pokemon etched on the frame. Instead, I received a sturdy little wrist computer with - from best I can tell - most of the features you would get with the high-dollar versions. After downloading the somewhat suss Chinese app on my iPhone that initially displayed Mandarin language, it quickly read the room and spewed forth good ol' 'Murican language. Set up was actually easy and painless; I was able to choose from a trove of watch faces, set my units of measurement (Imperial, thank you very much) and connect with my existing phone apps such as Apple Health and weather. I get tiny itty-bitty next notifications on my screen and can even receive phone calls if I'm proximate to the mothership iPhone.
Who knows how durable this thing will prove to be, but I think this is a boffo way to dip one's toe into the pool of smart watches. I am not a fan of wearing a wristwatch nor of adding more distracting screens to this modern life, but this is a great way to experiment with the technology. Who knows? If this proves to be the coolest thing since sliced bread, maybe I'll pony up for the brand-name version some day.
